New Primary Care Emergency Service (SUAP) in Maó (Menorca) at the Verge del Toro Health Center.
November 5, 2025
The Balearic Islands Health Service has awarded GNGRUP the contract for the construction, management, and supervision of the works to adapt the new Primary Care Emergency Service (SUAP) in Maó at the Verge del Toro Health Center. The project, valued at €1,301,721.89, is financed with funds from the Island Factor of the Special Regime of the Balearic Islands, and has a completion timeframe of twelve months.
This improvement is part of the Health Service’s Infrastructure Plan and will involve relocating the Primary Care Emergency Service for the Llevant area from the Dalt Sant Joan Health Center to the Verge del Toro Health Center.
The new emergency services in Maó will be located in the basement of the health center, situated on Barcelona Street, and will occupy an area of 484 m², representing a sevenfold increase in the space of the current SUAP. There will be four consultation rooms, a treatment room with two stretchers, a cardiopulmonary recovery room, and an admissions area with a waiting room and restrooms for patients. The staff area will consist of a lounge with a meeting and training room, an office, and a bedroom. The existing storage and changing rooms in the basement will be retained.
The project also includes improvements to the building’s exterior, such as widening the entrance on Sant Pere Street and restructuring and relocating the windows to adapt them to the new layout and bring more natural light into the interior. The slope of the access ramp will also be corrected, and an ambulance parking area will be created very close to the entrance.
This project aims to address the current space shortage at the SUAP (Primary Care Emergency Service) to serve the residents of Maó, Sant Lluís, and Es Castell, who together have 45,200 individual health cards. The emergency service is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday to Sunday, and has a team consisting of two doctors and two nurses for each shift, which in summer is reinforced with a third professional of each category.
