GNgrup engineering of the 1st Prize – Plaza Mayor de Palma, Mallorca

We are very pleased to be engineering the winning project of the international competition for the improvement of the Plaza Mayor of Palma, the lower floors and its surroundings.

“This is one of the projects that will mark a before and after in the architecture and configuration of the center of Palma,” said the mayor, Jaime Martínez, who described the proposal as a ‘decisive step towards a modern, vibrant and cohesive city’. The mayor stressed that the action will serve to activate a hitherto underutilized space, “devoid of utility and victim of unnecessary neglect,” and turn it into one of the great cultural, social and commercial centers of the city.

The preliminary project, christened ‘Agora 001’, was selected from among thirteen proposals submitted to the competition, and proposes not only an intervention in the square itself, but also in its accesses and adjacent streets such as Sant Miquel, Marquès de Palmer, Costa del Teatre, Costa d’en Sintes or plaça dels Capellers. In all these environments, pedestrian space will be prioritized and landscaping solutions will be applied to maintain the identity of the place, such as the elimination of visual railings between levels or the incorporation of new accessible routes.
